Jesus’s Commission of His Disciples
Scripture: Acts 1:1-11
In Acts 1:1–11, Jesus gives his disciples their final instructions before ascending into heaven: they are to be his witnesses, empowered by the Holy Spirit, from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. But this mission does not depend on their strength, ingenuity, or influence. Its source is the ascended Christ, its power is supplied by the Holy Spirit, and its scope extends to the whole world.
Pastor Thomas shows us why the ascension is not Christ’s absence but his enthronement, why Jesus commanded his disciples to wait before he told them to go, and why God delights to use ordinary people in his extraordinary mission. The same Jesus who began his work on earth continues it through his Spirit-filled church until he comes again.
